December Newsletter

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ of Calvary Lutheran Church, Wellington,
Greetings in the name of the Lord! By the time you read this newsletter we will have already begun the season of Advent, the penitential season of asking the Lord to prepare His way in our hearts, in our celebrations of His coming to us as a baby two thousand years ago, and in His coming again to us in glory soon.
During the season of Advent we invite you to worship with us on our Wednesday night services at 7pm. The services are shorter than Sunday morning services, using the order of Evening Prayer, and are preceded by carol singing.
Again this year the Wellington Ministerial Alliance is raising funds through bell-ringing for the Salvation Army at Dillon’s and Wal-Mart. I encourage you to participate if you can. Last year we raised around $15,000 from the bell-ringing. Salvation Army takes 17% of that for their expenses and state-wide use, but the rest comes back to us to use in Wellington and Sumner County, approximately 1,000 dollars a month. That, combined with the direct contribution to the Ministerial Alliance is what we use to help those with emergency needs for gas, food, medicine, utilities, rent, and other expenses. The sign up for two hour or one hour slots for ringing is online. If you are interested, please contact me and I will help you get signed up. It’s fun. All you do is ring a bell, wish shoppers a Merry Christmas, and say thank you.
Our annual Children’s Christmas program will be part of the Sunday worship on the 13th of December. Later that afternoon Vickie, Vanessa and I will be having an open house at our home from 4:00-7:00.
Our two older daughters had baby girls in the last two months. Everyone is do-ing fine. We will be going to visit them in early January. They both live on the west coast. Pastor Marvin Barz will preach while I am gone.
The English as second language course is going well in Arkansas City. Every week I print out a Bible verse in English and Spanish for the students to take home with them as they leave. We hope that the course will give them skills to help them in their various vocations, and that the word of God will work to bring the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ to their hearts.
May God richly bless you in this Advent and coming Christmas seasons, that you remain strong in the faith, joyfully looking forward to the coming again of our Lord to us in power and glory, as He once came as a little baby in a little town called Bethlehem.
Blessings in the Lord
Pastor Wingfield
